I knew it was coming the Birthday with a zero in it.....
The first time it happened it was an All Ireland cycle ride ....Malin to Mizen Head
The next time it was an All England cycle .... Lands End to John O Groats
This time it was Door to Door ... that's our house in Northern Ireland to our house in Spain.
After many deliberations and one cancelled attempt last year .... we agreed a route and had to take the bull by the horns as we needed to be home for Easter!
He left Bangor well wrapped up in his cycling leggings ...it wasn't long before the rain came on and so it continued right until we got on the ferry in Dublin the next day.
After a long overnight to Cherbourg we were hopeful that we would have come far enough south that we would see the sun .... No Chance!!
On disembarking the late morning ferry in Cherbourg the rain was still coming down and it continued through the 80 long French miles until he reached Granville - we awoke to the sun and a beautiful view of Mont St Michel and so the sun and the dry weather stayed with us for the rest of the trip.
Granville to St Maugan to 93 miles
Saint Maugan to Saint Blevins des Pins 81 miles
Saint Blevins to Lucon 97 miles
Lucon to Royan 77 miles
Royan where we had a day off .... it was Paddy's Day and we cycled 15 girlie miles!!
After the wee break in Royan we got the ferry across the Gironde Estuary and he cycled his first 101 miles to Biscarosse
Last flattish day was in France - Biscarosse to Ustaritz 90 miles
Ustaritz to Pamplona 65 (Pyrenees) .... yeah we are in Spain
Pamplona to Tudela 58
Tudela to Daroca 90
Daroca to Teruel 63
Teruel to Jalance 101
Jalance to Torrevieja 114
16 nights away (one cabin and 15 hotels) til we got to sleep in our own beds again!
He tells me that it has spent a long time thinking about doing this one since we bought the house here in Spain and he was heard to say
"Never Again" .... so I am still hopeful that when it comes to another milestone Birthday that he remembers that!
Total miles cycled 1240
Number of cycling days 15
We worked this out at an average of 83 miles per day
120 miles down through Ireland/ 640 odd miles on mostly D roads in France and over the Pyrenees and the final 480 odd and very hilly and windy miles down through Espana mostly using the N roads.
That's it then .... love a good road trip!
Crossing the Loire at Saint Nazaire.
Leaving Royan and crossing the Gironde Estuary.
Overnight in Tudela and looking out over the River Ebro
The walled medieval town of Daroca
Last day on the bike ..... leaving Jalance - happy as!
Unexpected easy climb to Otxondo
Harder climb overlooking the traffic tunnels.
